SOUTHEAST HIGH BAND PROGRAM
Titles and Awards
2015 - 2019
SECTION LEADER: DRUMLINE
I was promoted to section leader my freshman year. It was my first leadership position and it was challenging to be in charge of people older and more familiar with band than I was. I learned a lot in my first year and used it to improve my leadership skills. This resulted in my section being awarded "Section of the Year" the following year. My responsibilities included leading section practice, teaching members of my section individually, and keeping my section's area clean and organized.
Throughout this time, I played several instruments for the drumline including:
Cymbals
Marimba
Synth
Bass Drum
Snare Drum
2019 - 2020
DRUM MAJOR: MARCHING BAND
My senior year I was promoted to Drum Major. This is the highest position in the band. My responsibilities included creating and executing practice schedules, leading all games and performances, and teaching and training other officers and band members. My experience as a section leader only partly prepared me for this role. I now had around 70-80 hyperactive teenagers that I was in charge of. One thing I learned how to do very quickly was raise my voice so it could be heard over everything else, which is a skill I've found to be useful in the rest of my life.
At the end of this year. I was awarded the John Phillip Sousa Band Award.
2015 - 2020
OFFICER: JAZZ BAND
Being an officer in marching band transferred over to jazz band as well. Non-marching band specific responsibilities continued throughout the year. In my four years in jazz band we were always short on musicians, so I played whatever I could to fill the gaps.
This included:
Guitar
Bass Guitar
Alto Saxophone
Tenor Saxophone
2015 - 2020
OFFICER: CONCERT BAND
My experience in concert band mirrored that of jazz band.
During this time I played:
Mallet Percussion
Battery Percussion
Tenor Saxophone
I also received a rating of 'Superior' on my senior year marimba solo.
